We are thrilled to announce that the Power Emissions Certificate (PEC) Registry has been officially renamed The Granular Registry! This change reflects our commitment to aligning with the evolving Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol revisions and ensuring all corporate energy buyers can confidently participate in next-generation carbon accounting.

Why the Name Change?

As the industry shifts toward more precise and impactful carbon accounting, we recognize the need for a more inclusive and adaptable framework. The new name, The Granular Registry, better reflects our mission to enhance granular time, location, and impact-based energy certificates, building on the foundation set by the EnergyTag Standard.

Additionally, this rebranding helps incorporate the latest developments in the GHG Protocol, ensuring that energy buyers have access to trusted, high-quality data that can support their sustainability goals.

Key Enhancements

The Granular Registry will feature an opt-in process that allows users to assign marginal carbon impact to all Granular Certificates (GCs). This approach is essential for enabling:

  • More precise Scope 2 emissions reporting

  • Improved impact-based procurement strategies

  • A market-driven mechanism to optimize decarbonization efforts

Alignment with the EnergyTag Standard

While the EnergyTag Standard defines the core structure of Granular Certificates (GCs), it does not specify all implementation details. We firmly believe that an industry-led governance approach is the best way to ensure both trust and innovation. To this end, the Granular Registry Foundation, an independent advisory body, will guide the evolution of the methodology to maintain transparency, reliability, and alignment with the industry's needs.

Ongoing Registry Operations

We are actively onboarding projects and issuing GCs under the EnergyTag Standard’s defined configurations:

  • Configuration 3: Issue Retired GCs for Retired RECs

  • Configuration 2: Issue Active GCs with registry integration

  • Storage-based Time-Shifting of GCs to increase CFE coverage, carbon impact, or both.

These configurations ensure that organizations can leverage battery storage to time-shift GCs responsibly, enhancing both impact and flexibility for energy procurement strategies.

Join Us in Shaping the Future

The Granular Registry is more than a name change—it’s a commitment to industry leadership in transparent, high-impact carbon accounting. We invite energy buyers, sustainability leaders, and policymakers to engage with the registry, participate in governance discussions, and help shape the future of granular energy procurement.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to expand the Granular Registry’s capabilities and drive innovation in clean energy accounting!
